Karma means action and every action has a positive or negative reaction. Thus you will experience Karma within this life time and in the next. I remember one of the most interesting things i learned from the Buddhist monastery was that everything in life is Karma. You are Karma, the other self is karma and the environment is Karma.
Everything is a reaction of a previous action. One level of understanding Karma can be seen fairly simply as do unto others as you would have them do unto you. However another perhaps deeper understanding could be seen that it is the inner conditioning that you carry with you that creates the reality we experience as negative events rather than anything outside of the effect of the self.
The less Karma we have the less of the physical manifested universe appears to us.
