Hmm, I haven't actually thought about it that much, but I think happiness is something like "feeling alive". It's a type of awareness, I suppose. I don't attribute to happiness the emotions as most people do, such as excitement, passion, enjoyment, but rather happiness is, to me, a sort of peace with your life. When you feel at peace with your life, even if it is full of chaos, I think you can consider that happiness. I go through many challenges and sometimes I feel sad or depressed or angry, but there is a part of myself that is happy even for those things because they are part of life.
I think, rather, it is that we are full and complete in all our emotions and rather we just go through shifting awareness of those things. So, I think happiness is always there, always in everyone's mind, but many cannot see it because they have no conscious focus on it, they believe it is obscured by its opposite or opposing emotions when really it's just that one has forgotten the happiness. It is always there and I think the key is learning to be aware of it as it is always there rather than depending on experiences or stimuli to "bring it out". One never truly "loses" happiness, they just become unconscious of that part of themselves.
Like for myself, I know that I do not always FEEL happiness, but I always know that I am happy and that happiness is within me. I suppose I don't place much emphasis on always needing to directly experience something if I know it is there.
