Mirror Gazing

I stumbled upon this the other day while staring at myself in the mirror (I'm a bit of a narcissistic SOB) and my vision got dark and smoky, kind of like i was going blind...i was getting blind spots, and i noticed by body outlined in light, and other weird things, like my entire body would turn black like a silhouette, my face would sort of mutate/devolve into a sort of zombie-like face, and then other peoples' faces would superimpose onto mine, my head turned into a big formless black void, i saw a little alien dude's face and lots of other different faces. It was a little freaky but I could stop it at any time by refocusing my eyes. No I wasn't on any drugs.

I had known nothing about mirror gazing before this event, so i googled "seeing other peoples faces in the mirror" and learned this was a fairly popular thing. Have any of you guys ever tried this?

I believe most of us has done this, since it's fairly probable you'll do it by "accident".
It's quite interesting indeed, I have no real theory as to why it happens, but it must be a kind of meditation. Doing this was my first experience of a kind of deliberate meditation in any case. It's very easy to lose track of time and thought while doing this, you stare into the infinite and a subjective visual representation of it.

Exercise Three. Gaze within a mirror. See the Creator.

Exercise Four. Gaze at the creation which lies about the mind/body/spirit complex of each entity. See the Creator.

The foundation or prerequisite of these exercises is a predilection towards what may be called meditation, contemplation, or prayer. With this attitude, these exercises can be processed. Without it, the data will not sink down into the roots of the tree of mind, thus enabling and ennobling the body and touching the spirit.

I’ve had this same experience. I thought I was just nuts. I was in the gym of all places and working out on the treadmill. It had been a stormy day and power surges had knocked out the cable. Consequently, I was staring at a dark TV screen. And in that glossy murkiness…my reflection changed. Not just once, but many times. Going from my face to various types of brutish visages. Heavy lowered eyebrows, thick rough looking skin…segueing and re-forming into other primitive looking countenances.

I was alone in the gym on a Friday night. My hair was literally standing up on the back of my neck and I could feel my heart thumping and constricting in my chest. But I stayed on the treadmill staring into the screen because I was interested…and somewhat frightened also.
It eventually faded away after I asked it to go. But still….

I told my wife about a few weeks later. I still didn’t half believe what happened. We were jokingly calling it…”The Ghost in the Machine”. But reading you story….perhaps it was something else?

It is a really good way of showing you that we are all indeed one.

I have done this many a time after getting out of the shower since about age 12.

Anyway I have just recently made sense of it.

I wonder if it's sensible to add the neurological explanation at this point... People sometimes want to believe in the paranormal more than they want to hear alternatives. And I tend to make myself impopulair. Anyway here goes.

Our Neurons are good at quickly recognizing and reporting a stimulus and then proceeding to do something else. In a very dynamic world. If they remain used for a longer time for the same task they will quickly tire and begin making slight mistakes which can be perceived. The changed images usually vanish very quickly if you blink your eye.

I'm not saying that the things you see are without meaning. You get literal ambiguity in the neurons. And this stimulates the perception of subconscious visions. Combined with psychic abilities this might trigger actual visions. I know for a fact that "mirror scrying" has been a part of the european occult tradition for centuries. They allow visions to be perceived by reducing the influence of normal vision. In exactly the same way a crystal ball does this..

Anyway the latter part is occult tradition. The former part is absolutely understood by science.

A very similar event occurs when you draw a black dot on a piece of paper you can make it disappear by staring at it intently for about a minute. This isn't magick perse... It's a neurological game.

Perhaps I'm being too down to earth. But I think Science proved itself worthy of our attention whenever it has an opinion. We don't have to agree. But if we disagree we should do this only with some very good reasons. And not just because we prefer the alternative.

Discernment is very important. And we usually have too little of it. In my opinion the goal isn't to believe in the occult, it is to discover the truth however occult or mundane it might be.

Of course! And don't stop giving your point of view either, I think I speak for many when I say, we want to hear it. I'd hate for any line of thought to become discouraged, (besides hateful thoughts of course). We need it to stay objective, and it's a service to everyone when they're given food for thought.

I don't believe that fundamentally there should exist any contradiction between science and spirituality. So if you are receiving a psychic vision or your brain is manipulating things to create a vision is irrelevant, because you are still seeing something other than yourself.

I think the real question is, do you derive meaning from what you see? And if so how do you interpret it?

Exactly my thoughts. In practice we often place science and spirituality in opposing camps. But there is a deep zenlike spirituality in science itself. When it is applied properly rooted in the philosophies it came from and spirit casts aside its preconceived notions on how the world aught to be then there is no conflict. Matter is simply the "view screen" on which spiritual entities play out their lives. No matter how mundane a thing is from a materialistic viewpoint. The spiritual experiences of these things can still be profoundly eye opening.

This guy named Robert Anton Wilson suggested that "The thinker thinks and the prover proves" in that order... So I would suggest maybe our state of mind, the sum of our expectations and the questions on our minds determine what we will consider proven by having the experience..

If thats true then they are subject to great distortions. So what experience can be experienced free from these preconceptions?
