plus you need photoshop or some kind of art program that has multiple layers to create textures.
here is my crappy 3d modeling reel from after i finished art college. i'm happy to answer any questions you have and point you in the right direction.
don't use blender. theres no animation company that uses that. use maya.. maya... maya... or 3ds max..
If you never heard of Gnomon Workshop, you may want to check out their stuff, they have everything from beginning to advanced tutorials using ZBrush. i have a bachelors of science in video game art and design. i graduated like 4-5 years ago.

I'm not looking to get hired. I just want to be able to model a character that I like. And perhaps animate him. Once I have the principles down I can do much more.
Doesn't Maya put a watermark on renderings?
umm i don't think so no.
my specialty is character modeling. or... was character modeling

honestly, you should set aside time to just watch at least one character modeling video.
Yeah, I'm looking into that. Right now I'm studying particles and rigid bodies. Going through a few tutorials on that. Then I'll do character modeling.
There is only one character I really want to model. And I'm giving myself a year to do so, studying almost every day. But not getting burned out.
Thanks for the great advice.
