My 3D Renderings - AnthroHeart - 07-03-2016

I'm studying Blender (a free, fully functional 3D modeling and animation program.) Here is my first render.

I'm following a tutorial. This one took about 30 minutes because I was also following a guide.

I have a newer version of Blender than what the tutorial was made from, so some of the buttons are different. Hunting for the right keyboard shortcut and button take the longest.

How neat! Can't wait to see your progress!

RE: My 3D Renderings - AnthroHeart - 07-04-2016

Here's plastic, gold and silver foil textures on UV spheres. I learned how to take textures/materials from one Blender file and append them to another blender file, so I have a library of textures that I can use.

RE: My 3D Renderings - Aion - 07-05-2016

Cool man, I've gotta spend some more time getting to know Blender. The program I was 'trained' on in 3D Studio Max. Some of the last things I did before my PC died...

RE: My 3D Renderings - AnthroHeart - 07-05-2016

Here's an excellent tutorial, and some of the lessons contain a PDF and Blender files.

I used a bezier curve to shape the wineglass. And used transparency on the glass and an index of refraction to distort the light.

RE: My 3D Renderings - AnthroHeart - 07-06-2016

It took me about an hour and a half to create this render.
I learned about lighting and grouping vertices.

RE: My 3D Renderings - AnthroHeart - 07-10-2016

Here's a shark animation I did today. I did not model the shark because I couldn't find a tutorial for doing so.
I just animated it.

I used bones to rig the armature. They create a pivot point for the tail fin.

RE: My 3D Renderings - AnthroHeart - 07-10-2016

There is only one base sphere from which the other 124 spheres were created, using an Array Modifier.
Basically you can rotate an object around a curve and even create spiral staircases.
This took like 3 mins to do once I learned how.
This was created using 3 array modifiers. One for each X, Y and Z axis.

RE: My 3D Renderings - Jade - 07-12-2016

Your shark video isn't working.

RE: My 3D Renderings - Minyatur - 07-12-2016

Works for me on my phone

RE: My 3D Renderings - Jade - 07-12-2016

Ah, that's good, I thought it might be in the file because it's telling me that it won't play because it's corrupt. But it's likely an outdated plugin on my end.

RE: My 3D Renderings - AnthroHeart - 07-12-2016

You can right click and save as and try to play the file that way instead of in your browser. I recommend VLC for playing videos.

A cave. It could use a little improvement as it is too uniform. But it was a learning experience.

Thank you, that worked.

What made you want to learn 3d rendering Gemini?  If you don't mind me asking.  I'm about to start studying Computer Science and I have an opportunity to learn 3d graphics if I so choose, maybe you will inspire me to do so.  I'm happy that you have found something that you seem to enjoy.  Keep up the good work!

Nick Wilde from Zootopia is the reason I started learning 3D. I am self taught. I hope to model him in just under a year from now. I didn't draw this:

RE: My 3D Renderings - AnthroHeart - 07-15-2016

Used an array modifier to duplicate the object over the X, Y and Z axes. And added a second point light.

Blender allows you to create games too, as it's based off of the Python language.
Though I've never touched the programming part.
Still so much to do with the GUI.

RE: My 3D Renderings - AnthroHeart - 07-15-2016

Here's a rendering of a fire I just did. It uses 8,000 particles.
I had to undo some of what the tutorial said because it wasn't working.
You might need VLC to play this.

RE: My 3D Renderings - AnthroHeart - 07-16-2016

My first try at doing fur or hair. This has 3000 strands.

RE: My 3D Renderings - AnthroHeart - 07-16-2016

Here's an animation of a swarm of bees. I used particle effects to simulate each bee. Though they are all behaving the same.

RE: My 3D Renderings - AnthroHeart - 07-17-2016

Here is a candle burning that I created. It could use some improvement to be more realistic. I didn't really mess with lighting.

RE: My 3D Renderings - Aion - 07-17-2016

Not bad, seems you're getting to know lots of things about the tools available. Something to keep in mind is 'there are many roads to Rome' by which I mean that there are often many routes to the same results so finding the techniques that you find efficient and effective will come with time.

Personally, I'm an 'editable mesh' style modeler in that I start with a basic shape then make it editable so I can affect individual vertexes and faces and I build my models from the ground up like a sculpture.

RE: My 3D Renderings - AnthroHeart - 07-17-2016

How do you work Aion with a dense mesh where there are many vertices in a small area? It becomes hard to distinguish them.
There is a thing called Vertex Groups that allow one to group certain vertices that helps a little.
But the character I have has 2 shades of fur, and some of the fur clumps more than others.
I'm giving myself a year to see where I get.

RE: My 3D Renderings - AnthroHeart - 07-19-2016

A tree. Took awhile, and I still wasn't able to get the camera to show the whole thing.

RE: My 3D Renderings - YinYang - 07-19-2016

3D always makes me think of 9/11. I was on my way to the other side of town to go and buy a book on 3ds Max, when the whole thing unfolded. After I bought the book, I sat at a restaurant on this popular square that is usually packed with people, but there was hardly a soul in sight. All the people were bundled together at the audio/visual stores watching the news channels. I still said to the waiter this feels like the apocalypse, and he agreed.

Anyways Gem, I think you're coming on nicely. A good foundation with any new software is important.

RE: My 3D Renderings - AnthroHeart - 07-19-2016

Thanks YinYang. The branches didn't really want to work with me, so it was hard to make it 3 dimensional rather than flat.

Is 3DMax as good as Blender? I heard it's comparable with Maya. But I don't have funds to shell out for software.

RE: My 3D Renderings - BlatzAdict - 07-19-2016

there is a student version of maya that is like 90 bucks. i really suggest you get that. 3ds max is more for architecture and maya has more character modeling tools.

plus you need photoshop or some kind of art program that has multiple layers to create textures.

here is my crappy 3d modeling reel from after i finished art college. i'm happy to answer any questions you have and point you in the right direction.

don't use blender. theres no animation company that uses that. use maya.. maya... maya... or 3ds max..

If you never heard of Gnomon Workshop, you may want to check out their stuff, they have everything from beginning to advanced tutorials using ZBrush. i have a bachelors of science in video game art and design. i graduated like 4-5 years ago.
