I'd go even farther and say that for many people, it's more than living on a borderland, but a false dichotomy or dissonance, a "tug of war" or conflict between the upper and lower that is not brought into unison with an open heart.

Liminal areas are often like that, sometimes one group crosses to fight, sometimes the other.  The Boarder Country between England & Scotland, for example, has a very long history of that kind misery.
