My take on sacrifice is this: Every action taken is a sacrifice, which is why the significator of the body is the archetypal sacrifice. When I incarnated on planet Earth in 1984, I chose Louisiana as the geography of my incarnation. In doing so, I sacrificed every other possible childhood location on the globe. I will never experience Shanghai as a 10 year old because of this.
Thus, a sacrifice does not necessarily have to be something that you wanted to keep. When I buy a book, I sacrifice a few dollars for it. If the book is important to me, I do it gladly and I don't think twice about it.
But when it comes to spiritual gains, the sacrifices take on a different quality. My experience in pursuing the "jewel" is that my attachments to experiences in lower chakras are what must be sacrificed. Many of us have very strong attachments to these experiences and are very reluctant to let go of them. When the time is right, though, we will see this sacrifice as easy, just as I see paying a few bucks for a book as easy. When I have had enough experience of sex with multiple women, I will gladly sacrifice this experience for a single mate. But to attempt this sacrifice when I am not prepared for it is like regretting a purchase. The thought of the money I spent on the purchase will hound me, and I will begin to wish for it back. I may even sell what I purchased in order to recover only a part of the money I spent. This jewel can only be bought when one is capable of paying the price without thinking twice about it. And to attempt to purchase it when one is unready (i.e. when you still have attachments to lower chakra experiences), will probably result in a very powerful set of emotional catalyst. If your mate was ready but you weren't, you may break her heart or else break your agreement.
I have also learned that the price paid depends upon the subtlety with which you act. If you seek carefully and methodically, the price will seem small because it is paid incrementally. If you seek with headstrong force, the price paid will seem great because you will attempt to pay it all at once. This effect can be observed in the Matrix of the Body: the degree to which you tip her scales is equal to the vigor with which she cuts you down with her sword. If you only tip the scales ever so slightly, then it will feel as if you are visiting the spa.
