Having your feet on the ground is nice if you want to ground yourself. Grounding is a useful way to center yourself in the moment by tuning yourself in to the energy of the earth. You can draw that energy up into your body from the soles of your feet.
That said, my preferred modes of meditation are to lie back and relax or else to take a long drive on the highway
