It has the Monday Morning Crossword Effect going for it... named after the fact that because millions of people worked on the Sunday crossword the night before and added their collective experience to the consciousness field (call it what you will), people who work on it on Monday are measurably better at completing it. OM may have some kind of mind-altering power in itself, but it also has going for it the fact that millions of people have intoned it with the intention of altering their minds. And then of course there's the purely personal investiture of meaning and expectation that goes along with mantra recitation. I'm guessing all mantras and prayers work the same way.
