This is the best way I have found of saving YouTube videos.
Remember to go to the Tools->Codec Information in VLC and use THAT URL in the browser. VLC can't save videos directly.
- Download VLC, or another open-source media player
- Open VLC and click "Open Media" (Media -> Open Network Stream)
- Click "Network" and paste YouTube URL
- If using Mac, select "Window" and then "Media Information"
- If using Windows, select "Tools" and then "Codec Information"
- Find the "Location" bar at the bottom and copy that URL (click 3 times fast on it to select, then ctrl-c to copy)
- Paste that URL into your browser (ctrl-v)
- Right click the video and select "Save Video As"
- Name the file and save to desired location
