Did you guys saw an Windows icon below on the right corner of your screen?

    Within two months, A free update from W7 and W8 & 8.1 to W10.

It's still not clear to me why MS skipped W9?

Where exactly did you hear this?

    I'm running MS W8.1

The free update is only for MS W7 and higher.

I don't know maybe it is not free in the US, but here in Europe, Netherlands, it is free.

The reason they did that is because the Chinese were pirating illegal copies of Windows. So for some strange reason, Microsoft decided to just give away free versions of Windows. There might have been a valid reason, but I can't remember right now. I'm sure that if you google it you'll find the story.

As for why they skipped one version, that I don't know.

Yeah, I don't really know too much about it. I just pretty much know what I told you.

XP was a very good OS. But software companies have to develop new OS systems just for one reason. To make money.

They want to centralize to a single platform which would make it easier for the developpers to focus their efforts.

I've read something of the sort a while ago. And about the name it was simply because it looked better or some random reason.

I got the icon too, but I'm on Windows 7 so I probably won't bother.

My mom is on 8.1, so I might update her so it's more user friendly.

I hear you get the start menu back.

Why is it not practical to update Win 7? That's what I have.

On windows 8.1 I've torrented "Stardock start8" to have the menu at the left bottom corner.

So you have a customized desktop. Nice. I customized my desktop to look like this. I've since changed the wallpaper. But I'm thinking about changing it back.

    Postscript, ca. 4 hrs. later:

Even though I'm using Win7 (on an old "burner" laptop with just about everything disabled that can be, except for what it needs to tick over, surf, etc.), and my post here was relatively mild, I find now that all the function-buttons normally visible at the bottom right of each post are missing-- but just in this particular thread; all other places in the forum I've randomly sampled are still fully functional. Curious. But comical. So this is my separate quick-reply to my original post.

and so on. Barely scratching the surface of what's what. Cheers.
