I feel exactly the same as you, I also wouldn't keep a bird in a cage or a fish in an aquarium, and our dog is definitely never chained, he doesn't even have a leash. He sleeps in the bed, and thinks he's a human. He's a tiny little Maltese who doesn't shed any hair, and you can take him anywhere. And I love the wild visitor to your yard! :-)
I've raised some doves, they're easy to raise if you know what you're doing, just AVI Plus down their throats every four hours with a syringe, and then as soon as you have them on seeds you can let them go, but last year a wagtail fell out of the nest, and they're carnivores, so I had to dig in the garden for earthworms. (see the irony here? Killing one to save another...) He loved those, but then I think I made a fatal mistake. I gave him a dead fly which was floating in the pond, and it was late at night just before bed time. The next morning when I went to check up on him, he was at death's door, and he died in my hands just a little later. It must have been that fly, because he went from hopping around the house to not being able to lift his head overnight :-(
I do wonder about this "ethically sourced" business though, because the supermarket I mentioned before in this thread where I bought my meat, who claims their meat is "ethically sourced", have lied. It's all smoke and mirrors...
