Yes that sounds like "them" trying to suppress your awakening. But it's also an opportunity for you to process those fears which are repressed in you. As you process more and more of those fears, you will become more protected by love.
Just know that there is truly nothing to fear. Also, you can ask/accept the protection of the Creator, including all the entities of the multi-verse.
Simply work on releasing those fears when it grips you like that and you'll find yourself pitying them soon enough.
