The more joyful you become the less trouble comes your way and when you start becoming aware of the possible lessons those troubles try to teach you, the faster the troubles dissolve. In fact I like to call them obstacles or bumps, they are there to make you run better and get fitter.
Does a person have to express hatred toward another to realize that they do not like it? That is NOT how I see it. In my understanding most people would not like to have hatred expressed toward them and gladly accept love.
Enjoying a person's returned smile is certainly NOT STS. That is simply the manifestation of STO.
I agree with your last statement about learning lessons and being able to move into a better state of emotion via those lessons.
