Yes, abstractly I surely have an idea what love is, and it's a great feeling! But we all have different definitions of it.
The negative facets you describe are catalysts. They get stuck in you, and you have to analyze and get comfortable with them.
Most of us incarnated here to get comfortable with these sides.. that's the real work! And it's ugly sometimes.
When things flow through you in 'love' and doesn't get stuck, then you know you've made progress. Some things are easy to see the love in, such as those things you describe.
People killing and mutilating each other; not so much. Not if you focus on the action itself, but if you focus and see the people as perfect in themselves and part of a world which is experiencing itself, then it's easier.
