Well, based on what I read on channelings, it's said that we choose our life even before we take our first breath of life, but it's possible to "bite off more than you can chew" in choosing our lessons to learn in the period of incarnation, and even choose to learn those lessons at another time with some sort of compromise with your Oversoul.
