Regarding the above comments, I could go either way, but tend to think that the bird was random, if they just spotted it flying across the sky. If they saw it behaving in an unusual way or was around day after day then, yes, it might have been a signal.

I think I remember Jim saying that it was a huge bird and landed very near them on the lawn. Don in one of his questions mentioned that it was unusual in that it came so close.

It's interesting that Ra agreed that the hawk was significant and yet reminded Don that not all birds have archetypical meaning. Ra basically said the three of them needed to figure it out together.
