i broadly agree with what Taha said too - funny that all of us responding to you xlsander are from the uk lol!
however i have come across several politicians, maninly at a local / scottish level, who are in it solely for the purposes of serving their constituents - and the positive impact those individuals can make to people is huge. these people are unlikely to progress within their party though, they're the oppositive of career politicians, and i do think there is a difference between party politics and politics in the wider sphere.
so if someone feels drawn to the political arena, as long as that person can be protective of their energy and remain focussed on their intentions, then i think politics can be the means for making a difference one individual at a time
