I haven't seen any clinical studies showing that these machines are legit, so I thought I'd make myself one of the guinea pigs.. :-D The only thing holding me back is that the WaveRiders are incredibly expensive! Does anyone have one of these devices?
Not me.. But I've been thinking of it too. I would expect commercial versions of EEG based headsets to come out this year. Mind to computer interaction is the next big thing and a number of companies are constructing these devices. Mostly for games and toys but these should be more than good enough to measure overal brainwaves and should have no problems determining if you're in alpha theta or whatever. I expect that as soon as a version is released for pc we can expect people to combine them with binaural beats to have 2 way interaction with the brain where the computer does not just run a program, it actually interacts and plays the appropriate sounds for the current state. It can then learn by making slight variations to it's pattern and seeing how you respond to it thus making the process a lot more effective..
I'm trained as a psychologist and work as a software developer. So you can bet your bottom I'll be making efforts to get my grubby hands on one of them. Really they're not much more than a very sensitive voltage meter if you combine this with some Fourier transformations to split the signal up into frequencies then hey presto you're done. It's math but not terribly complicated.
Here's the company I have most interest in at this point.
http://emotiv.com/
There's also a bunch of demos on you tube if you search for emotiv.
They're speaking about 500$ per set on site. That's worth it considering I've been interested for many years. If you pretend to be an independent researcher you might be able to pry loose a researchers license today. (And lets be honest, you're independent and you want to research the options) I've been doubting and following the developments for a while now. It's definitely worth checking out.
I think it should be possible to measure brainwaves with a normal pc with microphone input. Basically just tape the wires to your temples using those specialized connectors that I don't know the name for in english :-/ You know the miniature satellite dishes that they glue to your head. I'm not an electro technician. So I might be missing some obvious point. But I believe the voltages produced should be comparable and the analysis required is mathematically simple. The results will be crude, but it should be possible to measure the difference between the different wave patterns.
Anyone have an idea where an independent could buy some of those miniature satellite dish whadjamacallits?
