Yeah, why shouldn't they be conscious beings? They are born, evolve, burn out (just like humans, haha) and turn into red giants or white dwarfs...
The planets are also correlating with different parts in the human body in astrology, for example, mars - head, sun- heart (or solarplexus, there are different approaches)
As above, so below (another hermetic principle)
And remember, how often we say "mother earth" (and Sting sings "sister moon" in one of his songs)

and Pluto, the unwanted step-child who was excluded from the planetary circle
