Juicy topic, I'll say that for starters.
For seconds, What is going to be in this post will probably be highly controversial, but these come from my own experiences with other entities, Spirits I called tham at the time.
You voiced the concern of not being able to distinguish alien thoughts from your own, alien being not from your own mind. This is what I ran into with EVERY person who wanted to try and learn what I was doing. Not only this but thier where always many little worries involved. Am I talking to myself, am I going insane?
To begin channeling, I never used to call it anything specific, or at least preform some sort of telepathy, you have to be self accepting. That is the short answer. For those that don't really understand it's meaning. You can't have any fear about the results. You have to be sure of your ability, and you have to be sure that you are not talking to yourself. There is no room for any worries of any kind because if there is, you have no chance of realising it if you actually sucseed. You would quickly, or eventually, deffinately one or the other dismiss your results, due to your fears.
Everybody knows what it is like to be running through thoughts, weather your meditating, walking somewhere or reading. At least I hope you hear your own thoughts haha

Each thought from yourself has a connection in some way or another to the previous thought. they build upon the last thought, and then you carry on to progress to the idea with extra decorations of thought, throughtout it's deemed finished in your own view. In understanding how our thoughts work we can easier see which thoughts are not ours.
It is noticing the break in the link of thoughts, the break of continuity within your mind that is one of many signals that youjust had an alien thought. Or as Al Q put it a sudden emotion that does not fit.
I'm going off the bat at the minute, thier is a deffinition between thoughtss and ideas? ideas bring groupings of thoughts. It would also be a key to noticing alien thoughts if you where able to distinguish the difference quickly. Ideas seem to be the way Spirits worked if I'm thinking back correctly. An idea would contain more information, and a choice, weather to act on it or not.
I found when dealing with multiple entities, and also being comfortable with the situation of talking to them, I found it possible to have a 3 way discussion a coiuple of times. This would seem to raise the complexity of just determining your own thoughts from what arn't but distinguishing the alien thoughts apart from each other also. In my case I was well aquinted with the Spirits in question, and with each thought of thiers, i was given a sort of feeling as to who it came from so to say. each idea had a name on almost. But obviusly this would only work by knowing the entities very well. The name in the meantime makes the messages/ideas longer and complicated.
The very first time that I did connect with a Spirit, (my Spirit Guide) I was following a weird mesitation from a friend. I was imagining tentacles coming out of my head, like medusa or something, it was pretty easy as I have dreadlocks anyway
These tentacles would reach around feeling all the room until they found something to connect to. Through this meditation i visualised a connection between the two of us which was the most important thing. As you can presume the meditation worked very well.
The majority of my meetings with my Spirit guide consisted in my own mental plane which had the appearance of a desert, then a desert oasis after a while. In deep enough meditations it was like sharing a park bench with him, telepathy on the surface no longer came into it then.
I hope this offers some usefull insights.
I hope to know what everk bosy thinks of the above also. I've never really spoken about those events so I'm curious as to what you make or them.
