Mainstream history thinks they have a coherent picture. They have chunks, and the further you get back from A.D. into B.C. territory and beyond, the more broken and scattered those chunks are. Past Sumerian times they have basically nothing. Grains of sand. Anything in the A.D. era the chunks are fairly coherent and arranged with few errors but missing fine details. Any further back and it's a lot sketchier.
