I'm in Hawkes Bay...Hastings to be exact.
I grew up here but moved to Wellington when I was 20.
I lived in Auckland (Herne Bay) back in 2012 but really didn't like it at all. Everyone seemed separated and out for number one, to the point of being a*******.
Opotiki was OK, until I got to know people and realised nearly the whole town was on Meth. The place is nice but the people are for the most part, stuck on a merry go round. That's OK because they're learning what they chose to learn but I didn't fit in AT ALL. I was the new age vegetarian barber, cutting the pig hunting meth dealing mobsters hair lmao. Never a dull moment tho and a lot of them left my chair with food for thought, as did I.
Aotearoa is a melting pot of culture and for the most part, we pull it off because of our (mostly) easy going nature and "she'll be right" attitude.
We still have racism and injustice but being Maori means I have rights that most indigenous people don't have, so atleast we have a legal foot to stand on, when dealing with things others just have to swallow.
I'd say it's one of the more advanced countries as far as progressive thinking goes.
