Think of it like having a bully, they want you to fight, to react, to feel shame, to be scared. But once you are nonchalant to them, they have no more power over you, and their actions become foolish and counterproductive to their egos. Maybe they can see the error in their ways, but that is up to them, and whether you are part of their catalyst for change is a matter of destiny, I would not make it your mission. Love is your defense, how it affects your attacker is not up to you.

Great analogy, a bully, just to add that making others to 'submit' to them is among their objective.
As it enable the bully to come again and again and again asking for a 'tribute'.
