The "modern" version of that story very well represents Christian/Manichean religious thinking whereby there are two competing gods, one good and one evil, in contention for the "soul" of humanity. That's one way of looking at the world, but embracing one while rejecting the other leaves one open to flip flops in spiritual alignment. It's like an inexperienced canoeist paddling from one bank to the other instead of straight up the waterway.
Case in point: St. Francis of Assisi founded a religious order based on love, and few centuries later Franciscans were accompanying the Conquistadors in the New World supporting the murder and enslavement of the locals by the tens of thousands. Another instance of how the black wolf can work against you in the shadows if you declare it an enemy is the way sexual predation had (or has) become institutionalized in a variety of religious organizations, likewise, supposedly dedicated to love.
Indeed, one's shadow can become an horribly destructive force if one makes an enemy of it. And, just to add a contemporary twist, that is exactly why we should regard DJ Trump and his band of thieves with love....as well as with discipline.
