Strip away the body, strip away the mind, strip away the spirit and we have consciousness, undifferentiated and whole, which knows no gender. The journey back to that source may be varied, but the goal is ever the same.
Culture is a technology that allows us humans to create systems of meaning in an otherwise meaningless world, and culture runs on stories. The stories we tell ourselves shape the way we perceive and interact with the world, but the thing to remember is that they are just stories and they can be helpful or harmful. I think many of the stories our culture tells fall in the latter category, which serve to divide rather than unite people. One set of particularly harmful stories are those that can be categorized under the heading of patriarchy, stories which idealize violent aggression in men and submission in women.
Not just as wanderers but as a culture we need to examine the stories we tell ourselves with a critical eye.
A biological male can exemplify the archetype of the High Priestess just as a biological female can exemplify the archetype of the Magician. The depicted genders in those cards are meant to convey symbolic meaning based on a cultural context that assigns certain characteristics to each gender, not an ultimate truth that supports gender essentialism.
Just my thoughts on the subject, take 'em or leave 'em.
