Two years old? Dirty and black around the mouth? Yeah, it sounds like they might have poisoned your cat. D: Would it bother him? Nah, he's dead. He's gone back to infinity. He knows your pain. I'm sure he'll reincarnate into another fine creature's body. 
Rites of the body are for the living, not the dead. I'm sorry you lost your kitty that way, what kind of awful people poison a kitty for waiting by the elevator. Though I'd definitely keep my cats inside if I'm not around knowing that might have happened.
I dunno what I'll do when my dude (13) dies. I used to plan to try do a DIY soft taxidermy and turn him into a pillow but (shrug) I dunno for sure.
