It's funny how post about the nudge towards becoming a beekeeper. I have felt the nudge myself! I think it would be fun and a harmonious act.
Wikileaks actually put out a document showing how the EPA approved the release of a controversial pesticide that kills honey bees. This could be the reason for the drop in population, combined with a study I read awhile ago showing how researchers found some virus that was being transmitted between the bees.
