I think he's just aware of how suns tend to go supernova.
He doesn't view trying to live on Earth forever as sustainable.
When I was an atheist, Elon Musk's goals made sense, given what I knew about science. Admittedly, this wasn't much, but I knew that astronomers consider the sun turning into a black hole to be inevitable.
I think Elon just wants to get the ball rolling so that by the time a cataclysmic event (which seems inevitable WAYY down the line, as far as modern astronomy is concerned) should occur, humanity will be ready. I think he wants to speed that process up as much as possible so humanity's not waiting till the last minute to become a spacefaring, world colonizing species.
He's thinking WAYYY ahead for humanity's future.
He probably IS a wanderer, but I doubt he knows anything about that.
