Many cultures have held many different beliefs about the afterlife. I, personally, think that there is no 'afterlife' but rather only transformation of life. Death is the ultimate illusion in my eyes. Whether or not I'm 'correct' I suppose I won't know until I get there but I feel like this is something I have 'known' since birth. Death is a doorway, not a room. Death is the passage of life to life. It is the movement of time, the movement of bodies. Every moment a moment has passed and the passing of that moment is a death. Life and Death are in constant flux simultaneously. Every moment life occurs is a moment of death for life is transformed in every moment.
The Ancient Egyptians knew this well, but they also knew that people held beliefs. They knew that the afterlife was a structure of the mind and was reflected thereof. Thus they spent a great deal of effort in preparation for their deaths and in fact the journey for each person was different. While they did have a general underworld called 'Duat' the specific journey that each would take through it was different. There is a misconception that the Egyptian Book of the Dead was one book and that it has to do with spells regarding funerary rites or death. In fact there were many as they were originally created for individuals as a tool to 'take with them' that would be full of spells and a sort of 'map' which would help them to navigate the 'afterlife dream'. You can view this culturally as a structure built through the 'astral' plane and so many people could tread Duat as a method of making it 'to the other side of death'.
Many other cultures also had/have underworlds and methods for navigating them when you get there. One approach is the total 'non-attachment' which basically allows you to step through the death dream very easily without getting caught up in the visions produced in the consciousness there. However it is by no means necessary and so long as you prepare yourself for whatever you believe you may encounter then you will have eased the concerns of your conscious mind hopefully. If you aren't sure what you will encounter then rest in that unknown, I would say.
