I have a story to share about this. About 4 days ago or so I was feeling very rough and just felt that I was being swarmed with negative energy or something. So before I had to leave for work, I asked "will my higher self or guardian angel show me a sign that you are there"
I was in the mood of, screw this, show yourself type thing. Well as soon as I got to work, a bright green grasshopper landed on my driver window (left) and just walked up to eye level and stared right at me. I thought about how it could just be a coincidence, but the fact that I haven't seen a grasshopper since I lived in Florida 8+ years ago and never a bright green florescent one that I can remember. And the timing.
I know this isn't the same as communicating with ones higher self as in a conversation or words. But hopefully one day I will be able to do that.
