It may be a combination of both because chakras 2-4-6 have a resonance with each other.
There’s a certain rhythmic breathing pattern called the “healing breath”. (One could also say that filling the lungs completely then exhaling completely, in other words, fully breathing, clears up old and heavy energy in the chakra body.)
The healing breathing pattern goes like this: inhale for a count of 6, hold for 3, exhale for 6, hold 3, repeat. To count, one will be using his heatbeat. So listen and feel for your heatbeat and count by its beating. The heartbeat will probably slow down and speed up initially but it will stabilize with continued practice. I’ve been practicing this rhythm but it’s hard to hear/feel the heartbeat. You need complete silence (well, that’s what I’ve found to be helpful).
The Yogis in the East use pranayama because in higher states of consciousness the breathing pattern changes. So, to mimic that breathing pattern, can also serve to move us into a high state of consciousness.
Air is the breath of Life. It was the Word. Spoken in Silence.
