I would say, whenever someone reacts with rationalizing to an entity suffering, its because he or she cannot stand the same pain in him or herself.

Agreed 100%. That said, we are positively awash in these kinds of intense emotions, and it's almost certain we will avert our eyes at times. I think this is understandable, and I'm starting to understand the function of time as perhaps a way of rationing emotional intensity. The more we balance, the more pain we can witness and bear within ourselves.
