I came to the idea a few years back that the past only really exists in the present. Memories and even first-hand perception in the past can be mistaken. Second-hand information about the past is even more fluid.
Nothing - the history books, other's accounts of the past, your own memories/your memory of your own perceptions - is set in stone. The only in the present can you investigate something, and even then it's no guarantee that your present perception will remain unchanged in the future, as new facts may arise that color your conclusions that you previously made.
