I often listen to music when I meditate- usually tribal music. My short attention span makes it hard for me to focus on anything without some sort of physical stimulus.
My opinion of meditation is that whatever works for you is great. Even Ra says there is no such thing as a right or wrong meditation, or a best way to meditate. Not all people are programmed the same way. Some people meditate while taking walks, doing artwork, dancing or just contemplating the nature of life. If you can handle sitting in the lotus position in silence without moving for hours on end, that's great, but MOST of the people I know couldn't handle that.
I have gotten to the point that I can have telepathic communication with my guides during meditation, and I am also shown many pictures. It isn't just a big white nothingness. Sometimes it can bleed over into my dreams as well. I think it is a good idea to meditate right before going to bed, and have a question or concept already set into your mind. It really helps with dream programming.
Good luck in your meditations!
