I think with introspective its easy to notice how the events that happen to oneself often relate to emotional states you've had or thoughts you've had. Whether "positive" or "negative", its like all events are truly always meant to serve you and hold meaning.
I guess its somewhat natural for people to forget past thoughts and emotional states though. Many will wish ill to themselves only to forget that they did when the ill they asked for is delivered. Most people underestimate the Universe in their attempts at challenging it. Then they will blame the agent that unconsciously was at their service rather than see they got what they asked for. Wishing ill to your reflection seen in others tends to do that too.
Yeah, I'd imagine that those helping provide service for us from the other side see it simply as us deliberately adding challenges to our lives. Or perhaps akin to someone lifting weights telling their spotter to add another set of plates.
But I also find it's important to remember that there's both positive and negative in just about any situation and\or memory. When I've connected with my 4D guide, sometimes she's stimulated memories in me that I avoid because I associate them with negative things, specifically to illustrate the positive in them as well. And the overall 'lesson' there, as I took it, was mostly that memories and past experiences simply are, and that I should choose carefully which aspect(s) of them I focus on.
I also got the impression that when those memories involve other beings, then focusing on the negative also reflects negatively on them as well. So that -if one must assign a polarized distortion to past events- it probably is better to focus on the positive, so that the positivity can reflect on both self and other-selves.
