For me, it comes to this: to be able to see, know of, or be aware of, the suffering, and be able to bear it. I can't imagine feeling good about it. But what I am working on now is accepting the pain I feel and letting it pass through me, rather than try and turn my thoughts which is akin to ignoring it. In ignoring it, it's still inside me barricaded against consciousness. So what I am doing is accepting the pain, not accepting the suffering. I wouldn't say I'm very evolved. I can't look at suffering with equanimity.
The process is somewhat like the Litany Against Fear in Frank Herbert's Dune series, although I am speaking of pain:
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.
