When we lost our first dog, when she was only 5 years old (a Black Widow spider bit her and she went into shock and died)., we went and got a rescued dog. This helped alleviate the grief a great deal because suddenly we had this very young exuberant entity living with us who demands that we play and cuddle. My only concern about doing this again is our ages. But time will tell.
Then I'd maybe follow Ra's suggestion to spend some time sending Chandler thoughts to move on to harvest, if ready. As far as adopting a new dog - you could always adopt an older dog. They're usually already trained and demand little attention, but regular meals and a soft place to sleep and occasional snuggles.
