Also, I learned a tidbit tonight: my husband was researching the old Star Trek tabletop RPG that he used to play, and they made it in the 80s, so the only canon really was the original series, so not much. After a few editions, and the release of TNG, the RPG developers got more into developing combat in the RPG - which caused Roddenberry to pull their licensing, because he envisioned the future as a utopia, with very little combat (more focus on puzzles and diplomacy, in the RPG).
Wonder if he's incarnated again as a storyteller?...
I know Gene Roddenberry never wanted to depict the Federation at war or violence on the planet Earth, but Deep Space Nine shows both of those things and I still really like that series
