Watch movies when you need to shut off your brain, but watch DVDs or at least Netflix, so you aren't being bombarded by the TV network's dumbing down and brainwashing energies. Listen to your intuition on which shows to watch; you obviously have that discernment, just go with it. As you disengage from the media, especially popular media, you become much clearer.
I noticed that many people situate their living rooms so that the TV is the central point of focus; couches and chairs all inevitably facing that big, blank screen. After a while, with everyone siting there, staring at the blank screen of nothing, it seems to be only a matter of time before someone feels the urge to turn it on.
Thus I store my TV on what I call the "TV Cart of Shame," a wooden cart with wheels. Like back in the school-days, before each classroom had a high-definition TV in the classroom, and the A/V people had to wheelt he TV in.
When we have the desire to watch something on the 'tube, we have to fetch the ol' Cart of Shame. Not that we watch much TV to begin with, but going the extra mile really cuts down on unnecessary wasting of time.
I've never paid for CATV in my life -- and I don't intend on it. Broadcast channels don't seem to even exist here in Kansas anymore, either. But I've never been a big fan of TV so it's no matter.
I do borrow DVDs from the library, though, for the occasional blunting of the brain ... but even still, it's something I want to give up in time.
