Do you think we attract those who need our help?

As I was meditating a minute ago, my friend popped into my head. I've developed some feelings for her but she's more of a friend and it's not something I'd want to potentially damage by being more than just friends. Anyways, I started pondering the reasons for the attraction and all of a sudden, I realized that she felt more like a project. A project that really has no reward other than to help her get back to being a happy person after all the hell she went through. I then started retracing all the women that I've dated or hung out with in the passed few years and every single one of them were either beat by their significant other or had very traumatic childhoods involving abuse. This got me wondering if we somehow attract projects for us to do our service to others?
