Adrenal gland produces corticosteroids like cortisol and catecholamines (e.g., endorphins and norepinephrine, aka adrenaline) - these hormones play a huge role when we are stressed due to physical pain and emotional pain. The brain doesn't distinguish between physical and emotional pain (they are both part of the body complex anyway).
The most interesting study I came across was how social rejection (orange/yellow ray issue) can trigger release of hormones that numb physical pain. The long term release of these hormones can affect the Adrenal glands.
