I presume he is going with the assumption that they would require more skin pigmentation to protect against the heat. However, there isn't really any reason to assume that melanin is the end all, be all of skin pigmentation. Nor is it ascertained that melanin is the only possibility of protection, considering there is no melanin found in spiders and there are plenty of desert spiders that are not black.
Also, things become weird when I consider that I heard that we are moving from being carbon based ljfeforms to silicon based. Trying to remember the source... not sure how that would impact pigmentation.
