I think it means hiding, in short. Looking at the context it was used in, around the body of the statement, I think it means to not have to deal with the inner self, by pretending to be someone else, or, pretending to be other than your self. It falls in line with distractions and sleep, both of which are taught in this society, through entertainment. Anonymity is the impression we get, from outside influence dictating to us, who we should be. Peer-pressure/advertisements/entertainment...
