This would sum up my opinion on the participants' reaction. Seeing someone giving more makes them feel inappropriate, guilty even, and they channel that guilt into anger, which translates into hurting others (punishment). It's what runs the current human world really, and I have yet to meet an annoying or mean person that is not suffering inside and who is only externalizing that sufferance onto others.
To get out of that vicious (how appropriate) circle, we must teach our children as well as people around us to heal our pains and negative emotions instead of sweeping them under a rug. The latter usually creates these situations where people, not knowing how to handle those emotions, lash onto others.
