This is exactly how I have thought it would all go down, with the added point that it would actually be a 3-way split: 3D (for those who need to continue their 3D experience), 4D STO (those who graduate STO), and 4D STS (for those who graduate STS).
It makes perfect sense to me that the splitting is dimensional, so that life is continuous for each of us, on our respective planes.
