Pretty sure Roddenberry was into channeling and stuff, which explains how he has so much "knowing". Also, I learned a tidbit tonight: my husband was researching the old Star Trek tabletop RPG that he used to play, and they made it in the 80s, so the only canon really was the original series, so not much. After a few editions, and the release of TNG, the RPG developers got more into developing combat in the RPG - which caused Roddenberry to pull their licensing, because he envisioned the future as a utopia, with very little combat (more focus on puzzles and diplomacy, in the RPG).

Wonder if he's incarnated again as a storyteller?...

Man, Roddenberry would have been so disappointed in where Star Trek games headed after he died. They got a lot more combat-focused as time went on. I don't think there's been one without a heavy combat element since the mid-90s, and some of them have even been outright shooters.

Then again, there's probably a lot about Star Trek's direction over the years that Roddenberry wouldn't have liked.

Atelier (on Netflix)

This is quite an interesting show - despite the surface subject matter - which happens to be set in Japan in a designer made-to-order lingerie shop.  It is in no way prurient or deliberately provocative; in fact, it's almost the opposite, and quite understated.  It is about strong women characters who are committed to their idealism, and a personal expression of what they consider their inner beauty, reflected in their choices of how they dress etc.  It even derides the mass culture of fashion, and the corruption of paid-for-advertorials and agendas in women's magazines.  Fashion, in their eyes, is about setting your own style, and not buying into this month's cultural fad.

This Ra quote came to mind in regards to standards of cultural beauty:

Perhaps the most notable exception is the attitude of one already strongly polarized negatively towards the appearance of the body complex.

There are those entities upon the negative path which take great care in the preservation of the distortion your peoples perceive as fairness/ugliness.

This fairness of form is, of course, then used in order to manipulate other-selves.

Japan still retains it's own style and cultural stamp.  Most notably in their elaborate expressions of public apologies.

I know Gene Roddenberry never wanted to depict the Federation at war or violence on the planet Earth, but Deep Space Nine shows both of those things and I still really like that series

I haven't watched it yet, but the SyFy channel put out a 3-episode miniseries called Childhood's End. It's about ET's who usher in a golden age, but somethings awry. There's also an upcoming series on SyFy called The Magicians.

Star Trek Voyager. The doctor is funny. I have all the episodes.

Voyager is the best.  I never thought that the archetypes of Next Gen could be dethroned, but Voyager wins my heart.  Next Gen is still great in it's own way, but Voyager is so much more human I find.

Doc is an awesome character.  Great arc and trajectory.  My fave was when they sent him through a communications channel back to Earth (Jupiter actually) to help his creator.  

Also when he learnt opera, and became a star attraction on that planet

If you like X-Files then I highly recommend Twin Peaks.

Agent moulder's character actually came from Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks originally debuted in the early 90's and is about an murder mystery that leads into the mystical realms into the after life with an fantastic twist. It is short lived two seasons but sure pack a punch for how short and sweet they are. May I also mention it is making a return on Showtime?

Recently I've stumbled upon Ghost Hound, a Japanese animated series from 2007 that's free on Amazon Prime. I'm not generally an anime fan (unless you consider Studio Ghibli's amazing movies) but this series is managing to incorporate psychology and the occult into an interesting mystery-based plot. In what other TV series geared toward a general audience will you hear the line, "by stimulating the angular gyrus we are able to reproduce an out of body experience"? Fun!

I watched Sense8 recently (NetFlix original) and was really impressed. If you haven't heard of it -and it flew under my radar too- it's a collaboration between The Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski of Babylon 5. Talk about pedigree. It's basically about eight individuals all around the world who are "awakened" one day psychically and begin sharing each others' thoughts, moods, even experiences.

There's the obligatory subplot about the nasty group that's trying to hunt them down, but most of it is very human-focused. It's a really philosophical show, sort of in the Philip K. Dick vein but without his cynicism, largely revolving around questions of identity - and what happens to it when it starts getting blurry. And it's got the most ridiculously diverse cast of any TV show ever, with on-location filming in Kenya, Korea, Iceland, and more.

It raises a lot of good questions about what happens as old societal barriers keep getting broken down. And in some ways, I feel like it's sort of hinting at (whether deliberately or not) what life might start to be like on a 4D-Positive Earth, where thought-sharing is natural. It's very very interesting, at any rate, with excellent performances and beautiful visuals\music.

I enjoyed the first season of Sense 8 with one caveat: they beat your over the head with (trendy-politically correct) sexuality. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind some romance in TV/film, but I don't like it when it gets so overbearing it becomes distracting.

I simply saw it as a celebration of love and humanity, including the most joyful of all possible (3D) expressions of love.  Referring to it as "trendy-politically correct" implies a deliberate or manipulative cynicism on the part of the show's creators that I honestly don't think was there.

After all, the artists involved have been exploring dimensions in human love as far back as the 1990s, at least.  The subject of transcendent mentally-shared love between telepaths was explored in Babylon 5 (along with ideas of cross-species romance) and the Wachowskis' first directoral effort -around the same time- was a mob caper movie turned on its head by featuring lesbians as the heroes.  Not to mention Cloud Atlas and all the ways it examined human relationships to find the purer love underneath.  Frankly, for Sense8 to not have sexuality as one of its main themes would have seemed strange, given its creators.

If there's any sort of "messaging" going on in Sense8 in that regard, I really only see it as simply suggesting that all manifestations of human love are equally beautiful, because the energetic and emotional connections are more important than physiological details of the bodies involved.  And surely one of the most valid uses of art is to help a viewer see beauty where they had not noticed it before, right?

If no one has watched Into the Badlands on AMC yet, I highly highly recommend it if you're into dramatic martial arts scenes Ala crouching tiger hidden dragon. Its set in some post apocalyptic setting where they have banned all guns. Only weapons are swords, knives, throwing stars, etc. It also has a sci-fi/fantasy aspect to it with a boy who possesses incredible powers. This is hands down one of the most badass shows in a long time. Incredible acting, ridiculously awesome fight scenes where my hands are sweating with excitement.

We just started getting into a syfy show called helix which is pretty cool. At first it seemed to parallel TNT'S The Strain which is another really cool show but has gone it's own way.

It's about an research facility own by a private pharmaceutical company in the article that's outside regulatory sanctions since it's in international Arctic lands. Some were working on certain biological mutigens which went awry and this is where the cdc peeps come in to try to get a handle on it.

Very weird hints at it being on purpose with some more sinister intentions behind it. We are only 4 or 5 episodes in but it's pretty good for a syfy show.

Last I heard they were scheduled to begin filming in Spring of 2016, which would make a late '16 start possible, but 2017 more likely. But waiting over two years between seasons would be suicidal for the show, I think. The last time I can think of a show doing anything remotely comparable was the BSG reboot, and it lost a *lot* of viewers after Season 2 with those endless delays between half-seasons.

Ascension (2014)

This is a mini series of 3 Episodes, with very high production value.

The series really pivots on 3-4 major spoilers, and so there's not much I can really say about it.

But a good watch.  I'm sure it has plenty of catalyst embedded in it for most people.

I basically shut my tv off when Voyager ended. Didn't even own one for years.
But recently I've been sacrificing my mind to "Lucifer" for an hour a week. :p
I'm really enjoying it.

Two of the best series I have watched are Prison Break and heroes. Especially Prison Break.

I watched the entire Lost series and enjoyed it at first but when I got to the last episode I had regrets watching the last 3 seasons. So much hype for nothing.

Last week I started Mr.Robot. It's a new serie from last summer and it's really good. A nice perspective of the complex psyche of a hacker. Might end up one of my favorites. A new season should come out this summer. I really recommend as it may not be well known.

Except those I don't usually watch TV.

I just got done watching Death Note, which I should probably mention in one of the anime threads but I really, really enjoyed it!!! It's a -very- serious anime but the premise is about a high school boy who finds a notebook where anyone who has their name written in it dies... and he decides to do "good" with it. Very fun show, I think anyone here who likes anime would enjoy it.

Cannot recommend Fargo (FX) and Leftovers (HBO) high enough. Season 2 of those shows had easily some of the best writing/acting/directing in all series I've watched.

I found to be an incredible OVA anime about Et contact. It takes about a confederation, and talks about the orion empire.

can't thank you enough for this mention.  I just finished Season 1 of this (just 10 episodes), and it was brilliant.  Wonderfully set and great characterizations.  It also has Scott Glenn ('Stick' from the Daredevil series) in a major secondary role.  Neato!

I thought it was totally gripping for the first 7 episodes, and then some strong leaps at that point sort of weakened things.  But still a very coherent narrative.

It's based on the book by Tom Perrotta, which, in turn, was springboarding off the cultural zeitgeist of 'what would happen if there was a Rapture like event?" - a la 2012.

So yeah, it fed a nice itch to play out those scenarios.

I just realized that Scott Glenn was in this, was wandering why he looked so familiar in Daredevil. Haven't read the book, but it is definitely on my to read list. I'm really glad the show is getting renewed for 3rd season despite the low viewership ratings, it deserves a proper closure (not that I'm unhappy with S2 ending).

I'm currently enjoying a Netflix exclusive show called "Stranger Things". I would describe it as "paranormal mystery".

It is about a small rural town in the 80's where a child goes missing under mysterious circumstances. It touches on a variety of paranormal topics. I don't want to give too much away but I've found it to be surprisingly interesting and compelling. They did a great job of recreating the atmosphere of the 80's.

I really like the 80s'-ish music in the opening credits:
