I agree with you and I have seen it over and over on trip reports where people tell about how they experienced spiritual oneness with the universe, beings of light etc.. To me it's just further validation of the legitimacy of the Ra material. As for myself I have done mushrooms and I still do it every few months. It can be a very wonderfully insightful and spiritual experience, but it is not something you should take lightly. I take this substance very seriously because it does have the potential to really mess with you depending on your mental condition. Like if you have a lot of anxiety and are fearful, this will amplify your emotions 10 fold and I can see how someone could end up in jail or in a mental hospital very easily while under it's influence, you simply break down and lose your mind (almost happened to me in a hotel once). This isn't meant to scare you but you should definitely be aware of the risks involved, you have to choose your setting carefully and have the right mindset going into it, music helps A LOT.
I'm not sure what the general perspective this community has on the idea of "drug" use, but I do feel the need to state that I completely reject the cultural taboo on drugs. This taboo seems to put all mind altering substances in the same broad category and denounces each of them equally as being bad and immoral, but the problem with this taboo is that it doesn't recognize the uniqueness of each substance and excludes the possibility that some might have a specific use or purpose when used responsibly.
I don't know exactly what place mushrooms have in spiritual seeking. A lot of people I talk to have had very profound first time experiences where they report full blown out of body innerdimensional experiences, travelling across the universe, visiting the spiritual realms and stuff like that (these experiences typically happen with high doses), they say "woke them up" to spirituality, but didn't really feel the need to do mushrooms again after that. I think that mushrooms were placed on the earth intentionally to give people these wake up experiences to the spiritual reality of the universe, to get a glimpse that there is more than meets the eye and perhaps to be an inspiration for further seeking. I personally have not had "hallucinations" or innerdimensional experiences on mushrooms yet, but that's because I keep the doses low. Along with the profound insights you can have on mushrooms, the visuals are very very cool.
I feel I should also elaborate a bit on what spero said, that mushrooms and psychedelics in general are not a shortcut to spiritual advancement. More often than not the insights you get while on them don't go with you and apply to your life forever after when you're done. I think the inspiration is what you take with you after a trip, the realization that there is more out there and the motivation to seek it in your everyday life. You don't become permanently "enlightened" afterwards or anything like that, which I think is a common expectation new people that are thinking about getting into psychedelics have when they read about it.
Overall I do recommend mushrooms, but very sparingly and with great care, preparation and caution. Start out with a low dose, several other people here have given sound advice already. There is a general "fear of the unknown" that I have experienced every time I've done mushrooms, someone else said that on the first page and they were absolutely right. This fear can get out of hand if you don't put it in check and lead to more severe thoughts and behaviors very quickly so you need to be careful, music is a great tool that I use to guide my trips. I recommend ambient/downtempo lyricless music, but that's just my preference. One thing for sure is that a lot of deep feelings come out during a mushroom trip, like layers of consciousness being peeled back you get to take a peak and see what's buried in your mind, things that you're not necessarily aware of consciously but are affecting you in your every day life, it all comes up to the surface.
