recently tibetans have been immolating themselves to protest the chinese occupation and theft of their country. there was an article about it today in the n.y. daily news. no one ever really talks about it but china stole that country decades ago and continues to use it as a colony. richard gere the actor has been an activist fighting for tibetan rights.

I have much empathy and compassion for the Tibetan People, there is much evidence that people can research to support your's and Richard's description of the situation. I would also add that I believe many, many Countries have been "Stolen" and "Taken Over", some more openly and some more secretively. Ours being the latter.

I only wanted to add these two thoughts, one on the physical act of self immolation and one as it pertains to the more Metaphorical/Spiritual aspect that self-immolation can represent:

#1. The Famous photograph of the "Burning Monk" (Thich Quang Duc) is THE most emotional image I have ever seen, no other photograph or picture elicits anywhere near such emotions and range of emotions in me, and it does every time. It does seem that the physical act of Self-Immolation can be, in certain cases, a very powerful and uniting form of protest against repression, that most say started the current Arab Spring and in History helped end the "Buddhist crisis and [was] a critical point in the collapse of the Diệm regime."

Also, did you know: "The body was re-cremated during the funeral, but Đức's heart remained intact and did not burn.[1][2] It was considered to be holy and placed in a glass chalice at Xá Lợi pagoda.[2] The intact heart relic[1] is regarded as a symbol of compassion. - from Wikipedia"

#2. There is a spoken lyric at the beginning of the song "Your Ex-Lover is Dead" by the band "Stars" that goes: "When there's nothing left to burn, you have to set Yourself on Fire." This lyric is THE most emotional song lyric I've ever heard, and elicits much of the same range of emotions as does the "Burning Monk" photograph/pictures. I take this lyric in a purely metaphorical/spiritual way and it has since become somewhat of a personal mantra of mine, and resonates deeply with me regarding spiritual change and progression.
