If anyone hasn't seen Jacob's Ladder from 1990 with Tim Robbins, I highly recommend it.

There was a quote in the movie. I posted about this in my other thread, but wanted a thread itself about attachments.

Quote:The only thing that burns in hell is the part of you that won't let go of your life: your memories, your attachments. They burn them all away, but they're not punishing you, they're freeing your soul. If you're frightened of dying and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. If you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels freeing you from the earth.

Do we carry our attachments with us after death? And will they hold us back?

How important is it to release all attachment and desire before death?

The movie made me tear up in a heartfelt way. It also scared me.

I am like now meditating in God's presence. All I can think of now is spending time with God.
I don't want anything else to distract me or really hold any attachments to this life.

I believe no energy is overcome as energy is you and love.

Not important. You need attachment to see something as important, so if you release all attachment there is then no notion of importance left.

I am not sure this really conflicts with your answer Elros but it is perhaps just a slightly alternate yet in agreement comment.

You do not need to release anything. There is no such thing as being held back. We stay because there are things left to explore. Those are the things we are attached to.

At the same time we don’t need attachments to see things as important.
One can be detached but still enjoy something and value it when it comes. It just means we will accept when that thing also leaves.

I am not there but as I get closer I really do lose my attachments.

One by one they fall off as we step towards unity. I still have a few attachments and I understand this is why I will return to incarnate and experience them till they too fall off and I return to the one.

So do they hold us back? Do we have to release them? No

But we move on from these attachments to a new experience once they are released. It’s not a cause but a coralation. All things in its time.
Nothing to worry about as you said. Just a path.

I saw some of Jacob's Ladder when I was young, and it was the scariest movie I remember seeing.

I should try seeing it again. Thank you for sharing!

Many cultures have held many different beliefs about the afterlife. I, personally, think that there is no 'afterlife' but rather only transformation of life. Death is the ultimate illusion in my eyes. Whether or not I'm 'correct' I suppose I won't know until I get there but I feel like this is something I have 'known' since birth. Death is a doorway, not a room. Death is the passage of life to life. It is the movement of time, the movement of bodies. Every moment a moment has passed and the passing of that moment is a death. Life and Death are in constant flux simultaneously. Every moment life occurs is a moment of death for life is transformed in every moment.

The Ancient Egyptians knew this well, but they also knew that people held beliefs. They knew that the afterlife was a structure of the mind and was reflected thereof. Thus they spent a great deal of effort in preparation for their deaths and in fact the journey for each person was different. While they did have a general underworld called 'Duat' the specific journey that each would take through it was different. There is a misconception that the Egyptian Book of the Dead was one book and that it has to do with spells regarding funerary rites or death. In fact there were many as they were originally created for individuals as a tool to 'take with them' that would be full of spells and a sort of 'map' which would help them to navigate the 'afterlife dream'. You can view this culturally as a structure built through the 'astral' plane and so many people could tread Duat as a method of making it 'to the other side of death'.

Many other cultures also had/have underworlds and methods for navigating them when you get there. One approach is the total 'non-attachment' which basically allows you to step through the death dream very easily without getting caught up in the visions produced in the consciousness there. However it is by no means necessary and so long as you prepare yourself for whatever you believe you may encounter then you will have eased the concerns of your conscious mind hopefully. If you aren't sure what you will encounter then rest in that unknown, I would say.
